A New York styled office in a small Ayrshire town might not quite be what we were expecting. Nonetheless, it’s a more than welcome surprise.

We’re here to take a look at the new working home of Volaro Ltd – a leading online fare management and distribution system for travel companies. Volaro is based in Kilmarnock, and was founded back in 2004. The company comprises experienced former GDS staff, experienced consolidator sales personnel and a team of highly talented and innovative engineers with a customer-centric focus.

Volaro has developed unique technology that forms the basis of its portfolio of services, including the Marine and Offshore travel sector, where its solutions and services are deployed on a global basis with organisations that specialise in this sector. By continually innovating and improving its technology, the company has introduced world-first services to automatically load all negotiated airfare contracts directly into the GDS, thus unifying airfare content in one place for customers.

When the company relocated to larger premises Volaro’s directors wanted to design a vibrant workspace for its staff and visitors. Taking over what was previously an old newspaper printing office, they wished to create something that would look like a modern, New York office space in an old Victorian listed building in Ayrshire.

Ocee-Sofa-Lii-Chairs-VolaroThe building itself was constructed in 1890 from local Ballochmyle red sandstone. The printing office was designed to mirror the former grain store opposite, a classically inspired Italianate building. As it was built to house the printing office, the building boasts fantastic friezes of Caxton, Guthenberg and Shakespeare. These characters were chosen due to their prominence and importance in the history of printing and the written word.

For the interior fit-out of the new office space, Volaro’s brief was that they wanted people to think they had just walked into a New York office. They wanted bright, vibrant colours, a light airy space and quality designer furnishings. The Saxen Workplace Solutions Team procured, space planned and installed said quality office furniture.

We are told that Volaro required a unique approach to their quirky brand style. To impress their existing and potential clients, See Saw Creative designed brilliant circular business cards for Volaro’s staff. Each card is different in colour, with a metallic foil around the outer edge. This has proven to be a great icebreaker and showpiece for the business. Following the success of the cards, Volaro then asked See Saw Creative to follow that styling through to the interiors of their offices here in Kilmarnock.

The soft seating for reception and breakout areas was chosen in orange from Ocee Design; sofas and armchairs have been selected from the contemporary Mood range with attractive brushed chrome legs. The Mood range is fully upholstered with angled deep foam seats and backs for maximum comfort. Orange fabric, to complement the soft seating, was also incorporated into the low Asteroid coffee tables in melamine white.

Italian furniture manufacturer Quadrifoglio provided the desking throughout the open workfloor. The smart and sleek bench desks are from the successful X4 range and manager desks from the X-Time collection. Coordinating divider desks screens were added to the bench desks, which are finished in Canaletto Walnut with white leg frame. Office storage and meeting room tables were also selected from Quadrifoglio in a matching Canaletto Walnut finish.

Volaro-Wall-Logo-Oce#483DADKeeping with the bright and colourful New York inspired theme and orange soft seating, orange Mirus office chairs were selected from Mesh Office Seating. The Mirus seating was chosen with the white frame to complement the white leg finish of the Quadrifoglio desking. The Mirus has a mesh back and fabric seat. Mesh orange Lii chairs with white legs and white frame were selected for meeting room areas.

The personalised wall artwork was the inspiration of the Graphic Design Team at See Saw Creative. Volaro wished to impress existing and potential clients with their unique, quirky brand style. Once again bright, vibrant colours were chosen for the wording, logo and kites.

Finally, the finishing touches included desk trays and accessories, naturally in bright, vibrant colours – with, of course, just a touch of orange!

The new Volaro home is a perfect example of how a clear vision, (more than) a bit of elbow grease and smart space planning and furniture solutions can transform not just a space, but also a working culture. There are clearly no little town blues here!
