Goddard Littlefair – Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet

Mixology23 Project of the Year: Hotel

Four Seasons, Istanbul

Project Team

  • Astay contractors, PARLA, ARTMIM HOTEL DESIGN GROUP, VANELLI, ZENOVA CARPET via STEPEVI, BAHAR, GALATA/ CREART, Tepta Lighting, ZKLD Light Design Studio

The concept and overall aim at Four Seasons was to elevate the space and breathe fresh new life into every corner, whilst maintaining the building’s architectural integrity and poignant history. To inspire their thinking Goddard Littlefair looked at the immediate surroundings of the property, its history, the cultural vernacular of the area, and in this case, the layers of heritage and work that lay beneath the surface.

Buildings from the Ottoman Empire, the Byzantine and Roman times are physically stacked beneath the building we see here today. In days gone by, the culture was not to tear down buildings and start again, but to layer new ones on top. All the interior architecture was retained throughout and, rather than stripping out, Goddard Littlefair added fresh new layers where necessary to complement and accentuate the hotel’s innate splendour.
