AHR applies innovative biophilic design principles at The Spine building
For the northern home of The Royal College of Physicians, AHR Architects was tasked with creating a building that leaves its occupants healthier.
For S•CAB’s HUG collection, the Italian manufacturer chose certified regenerated post-consumer industrial PCR technopolymer, obtained from the processing and regeneration of production residues thanks to the use of energy from renewable sources.
The concept of this chair comes from the balance between the two key elements: seat and back. The structure is built around them, an organic continuity uniting these two parts. Between seat and back, which have rounded and balanced shapes for best usability, designers Studio Meneghello Paolelli have introduced a band element, ‘enveloping like an embrace.’
Whilst HUG is technically a unibody, it’s actually a flexible system in which the components combine to create different chair and armchair configurations. Designed for the outdoors, it also fits well in interior spaces, with the possibility of covering some of its parts with fabric. Body colours include the classic linen, dove grey, anthracite, mustard and olive-green tones, with new sage green and caramel shades.
Two variants are available: one entirely in technopolymer that is particularly graphic and defined by an all-over embossed striped motif along the band; or a more graceful option with additional seat cushion and padded band covered in fabric. Fabrics are offered in a selection of soft shades, from neutrals to light blues to biscuit colour as well as black and white, made interesting by a melange effect and a visible weft.
“The HUG collection represents the consolidation of the collaboration between Meneghello Paolelli and S•CAB,” Studio Meneghello Paolelli comments. “It is a complex and ambitious project, a project that started from the origins of the company, a monocoque chair, and which comes to deal with real issues of usability and sustainability which represent today’s society.”
