‘kin create a ‘journey of discovery’ at Taylor Wessing’s art-filled workspace
Design consultancy ‘kin has revealed a bold new space for the global law firm’s Liverpool office, located on the city’s iconic Albert Docks.
Mother is an independent creative company headquartered in Shoreditch, London. Founded in 1996, they have grown to over 500 staff across offices in London, New York, Los Angeles and Shanghai. The London office is a converted warehouse (once a biscuit factory) originally designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects, with 4 floors of unconventional workspace. AW Spaces was tasked with designing and building a unique workplace with an emphasis on sustainability and re-use.
The centrepiece of the design is the huge 50-person oval shaped hot desk which wraps around the central columns, built from reclaimed floorboards with a resin top cast in situ – seemingly balancing on top of several concrete balls. Workstations have been replaced by bespoke desks, also built from reclaimed floorboards with a resin top, placed upon salvaged Victorian radiators.
Existing glazed Crittall style partitioning and doors have been repurposed into a new suite of meeting rooms, each with its own carefully curated collection of mid-century furniture and lighting. A 12 foot snooker table base has been repurposed as a boardroom table, with a paint finish MDF top and reclaimed vintage light fittings.
The space has been cleverly divided up in several zones with the use of curtains in muted tones, offering flexibility, functionality and gives the sense of a space without barriers. Epoxy paint covering the concrete floors and exposed pipework give a hint of the industrial.
AW also created a 18 seater cinema, complete with original vintage folding seats. Elsewhere, a new toilet block offers an 80s throwback with individually coloured suites in beige, avocado, sky blue and pink.
