LABS complete restoration of Victoria House: a new workplace and lifestyle destination

LABS and architects Hutchinson & Partners have beautifully revitalised the Grade-II listed building, including exclusive furniture designed in collaboration with Fred Rigby Studio.

Workspace provider LABS and architects Hutchinson & Partners worked with TSK Group to carefully restore the 200,000 sq ft Victoria House in Bloomsbury, launching the building as one of London’s newest workplace and lifestyle destinations.

Creating a harmonious bridge between these two significant styles, a new modernised layer has been added to the space, with a carefully curated palette of complementary and elegant natural materials. The result is a ‘unified design that gathers the original, the renovated, and the new, detailed in a refined and minimal fashion.’

Portland stone columns reveal an impressive entrance hall, carved in a neoclassical style from Subiaco marble and Italian travertine. A terrazzo staircase and triple height central hall sit at the heart of Victoria House: LABS and Hutchinson & Partners have replaced the floating glazed platform introduced by Will Alsop in the 2000s with a monolithic terrazzo alongside roughly hewn travertine slabs. Bespoke to this project, the terrazzo takes inspiration in colour and form from the old stone of the building, creating a play between old and new.

Victoria House boasts an unrivalled set of amenities across three architecturally-striking suites called: The Alsop Suite, The Long Suite and the wellness-focused Heritage Suite. Providing a dedicated space to escape, unwind and recharge, The Heritage Suite features an impressive state-of-the-art gym and multi-use studio, alongside a lecture room, boardroom and a meeting room suite dedicated to supporting future collaboration.

The members atrium, The Long Suite, features a series of booths with oak timber dividers add a warm layer to the space, while helping to zone meeting spaces to connect safely and privately. LABS and Hutchinson & Partners sought to retain one of Will Alsop’s most important interventions, characteristic of the practice’s style at the time – a series of pods, suspended within the space.

The upper floors have been transformed into a series of stylish contemporary workspaces, with central timber tea points welcoming members. A series of libraries, nooks, meeting rooms, phone booths and informal workspaces are also housed across every floor. Preserved offices saved from the original building sit in the northern corners of the building, complete with tumbled dice oak flooring, ornate carved marble, hardwood panelling and grand fireplaces. Marble, terrazzo, patinated brass, oak timber and leather detailing have been used throughout, a nod to the building’s history and complimented by a simple monochromatic colour scheme used throughout the rest of the workspaces.

LABS has created a furniture collection exclusively for Victoria House in collaboration with British designer Fred Rigby – combining LABS and Rigby’s distinctive style. The collection focuses on ‘organic shapes and free flowing design’ with the pieces designed to overcome typical office requirements. Soft furnishings in a mix of textiles ranging from sheepskin, linens, velvets, cashmeres and leather fill the space, and Victorian drawings and accessories create an additional layer of design and history.

Victoria House will open its outdoor roof terrace and contemporary lobby bar this summer, bringing Italian coffee and aperitivi culture to the neighbourhood – one not to miss!
