August 2022: Issue 221

In this issue

Issue 221 is here and it is testament to the benefits and needle-shifting influence of taking the uncomfortable path and championing disruptive ideas. Inside we speak to Locke co-founder Eric Jafari, who discusses creating a design-led hospitality brand, founded with the goal of getting right what other hotels were getting wrong, while PENSON CEO Lee Penson chats the nonconformist future of the office and mulls whether a break with tradition has been a long time coming. On the project front, we explore the first UK outpost of American workplace provider Convene, an organisation on a mission to reimagine what the workday looks like; check into 25hours Indre By, in Copenhagen, where Martin Brudnizki subverts Scandinavian design tropes; and tour the new HQs of two leading British institutions that are both re-evaluating their working practices. So too our thought leadership pieces lean on the themes and concepts that will be agitating the commercial interior design sector – from a roundtable discussion on neurodivergence to collective action on the climate catastrophe. Thanks to this issue’s cover stars Squire and Partners and Pedrali, collaborating to create a bespoke image featuring the Sebastian Herkner-designed Blume chair.

The logo

Inspired by Pedrali’s design ethos of continuity, Squire & Partners extended the wall tiling joints in the image so that they flow seamlessly to create the form of the Mix logo.

The cover

Designed by Sebastian Herkner, the Blume chair owes its distinctive appearance to a sophisticated flower-shaped profile in extruded aluminium. The steel structural element, placed under the seat to strengthen the chair and to secure the legs, is removable – meaning all the product’s components can be disassembled and disposed of at the end of their life cycle.
