April 2022: Issue 219

In this issue

This issue we speak to titan of design, Kelly Hoppen, and the founders of London-based studio Daytrip, Iwan Halstead and Emily Potter, about signature styles, design processes and latest landmark projects. We look at workspaces tasked with working hard for their users – from a vegan, deaf-friendly office for a communications firm to a global HQ that, in its design, juggles multiple brand identities. On the hospitality front, there’s a Scandi-inspired hotel with wellness at its heart and, at the other end of the aesthetic spectrum, an opulent restaurant with a Japanese sensibility. Also, our usual stable of influential industry columnists chart sustainability paradoxes, technology, hybrid working and the future of the high street.

The logo

Hassell reimagined a 3D pattern language by overlapping and overlaying the product, reminiscent of how we lay out sample and product on our studio tables throughout a design process. This speaks to the geometric shapes within the pattern while also creating a whole new pattern. The Mix logo is designed as a cut out, revealing the layer beneath showing the build-up of different layered surfaces.

The cover

Contour by IVC Commercial applies the principles of architectural geometry to carpet tile design. With the biomorphic Perspective expressing the structural integrity of nature and View, intersecting lines exploring the relationship between architecture and geometry; this carpet tile collection takes office interiors on a journey through principal architectural forms.
